Spirit of Relaxation CD1 - Rainforest

People living in the 90s had it tough and the only way to sort your self out was to listen to a tree playing a synthesiser. This box set contains three CDs and according to the blurb on the back:

"Life in the 90s, as we reach the new millennium, could not be more stressful. The Spirit of.... series will sooth, heal and regenerate your mind, body and soul. You will feel refreshed and better equipped to deal with all aspects of your life on this planet."

This first CD is different from a previous rainforest album that I've posted before but is similar in sound. It is 39 minutes of bird noises, streams and gentle synthesisers. I'll post the other two CDs in the near future.

60 Minutes of Jangle Pop - A Faceplant Mixtape
The missing link between Post Punk and Shoegazing is Jangle Pop. Indie music is hard to subdivide into categories since it is such a dodgy label to begin with. With hindsight I think certain bands from the late eighties and early nineties share a certain jingle jangle sound that comes from the equipment they used and the way their records were produced. According to Wikipedia, Jangle Pop was all about bands emulating the sound of the Byrds but as far as I can tell it had sod all to do with them and was more a continuation of punk under the shadow of 80s industrial decline.

I've tried to encapsulate that jingle jangle sound in the songs I've squashed together. It's a bit like an indie disco run by leather clad shuffling amateurs with sub goth frissy hair. Brilliant!

I'm really impressed with this compilation which I found in Oxfam. It dates from 2003 and is an excellent collection of downtempo, future jazz tracks put together by a Portuguese label called Difference. I'm not sure if it was given away by Elle magazine or not but it was well worh the £3.49 I paid for it. Strangely the 10 tracks are also half of another compilation called Alcantara Cafe released by the same label. The first track does contain the lyrics "Jazz sex in a freestyle nation" which is a bit odd but I could be hearing it wrong.

I found this in a charity shop about a year ago but after buying it I left it in the car for months where it ended up under the passenger seat. I've only just got round to listening to it and I've been quite impressed. The box had no details on but I've managed to work out the track listing.

The tracks are hypnotic and really have the feel of an underground cultural force exploding from Chicago out into the mainstream. According to Discogs the tacks have been edited to fit on to a CD so despite saying "Full Length 12" Extended and Remixed Dance Versions" the tracks are all a bit shorter than they were on the original Serious Records LP or Tape compilations. They are, however, still amazing.

I Love 1991 - Classic Old Skool

This was given away free with Mixmag in 2001. It kicks off with, "Yeah check this next track out. You've got Asterix in space. Watch your bass bins, I'm telling ya." and then Altern 8's breakbeat hardcore classic explodes in a hurricane of Roland 808 bleeps. On the inside cover it does say, "The tracks on this CD were made on cheap gear and mixed on dusty ten-year old equipment so any crackles, pops or distortion are meant to be there." So even though this has been ripped at 320kbps the sound is slightly crackly at times but I didn't notice after a while because I was too busy waving my hands in the air while jumping around the house. I don't remember ever hearing the GTO's The Bullfrg back in 1991 but it's now my favourite track of all time becasue it has Sinclair Spectrum noises in the background. The Psychopaths's Nightmares is also amazing.

The tracklisting printed on the back of the CD is slightly wrong and has The Shamen and Sueno Latino written in the wrong order. This is the correct list:

Sounds from Momo's Kemia Bar

This album seems to have bizzarre origins being a free CD with a magazine with music that is published by a London restaurant. The selection of music is actually really good and is sort of thing you would expect to be played in the background of a fancy bar. It's a selection of laid back downtempo dance music with a slight hint of world music. Imagine Morcheeba crossed with Massive Attack relaxing in a jazz club wearing a Fez after returning from Morocco. This has been getting played a lot at Faceplant Mansions. I don't like the first track but the rest of the CD is excellent if played in the background while you're washing the dishes.

The Enchanted Rainforest

This is an ambient synthesiser symphony. There are lots of nice bird noises and watery sounds in the background. The music is very laid back and relaxing. The last track sounds a bit like aliens landing in the rainforest but they seem to find the surroundings relaxing and decide to stay.

Best of Steeldrums

This album was released in 1994 and features the work of the Red Stripe Ebony Steelband. They are apparently the oldest and most popular steelband in the United Kingdom. They were founded in 1968 in London by five young men from Trinidad. They won awards throughout the period 1985 to 1989. According to the inner sleeve of the album, Billy Ocean is a long standing member of the Band who takes an active interest in the affairs and running of the group.

The album is mighty fine.

Gouranga Hey! - The Gouranga Powered Band.

This is possibly the worst song ever recorded. It was not what I expected. I really like the Gouranga word-as-virus concept to spread happiness around the world and I'm always pleased whenever I see Gouranga stuck up somewhere. This band however have spoilt it all. Here are some snippets of reviews I've found for the whole album:

Whales of the Pacific

Today I found charity shop gold in the form of Whales of the Pacific. I've been looking for whale music for ages and was over the moon to find it in a local Samaritans shop. The CD only has one track and is whale song with ambient synthesiser noodling in the background. It's very relaxing and conforms to the Brian Eno concept of ambiance that you only notice now and again. I think it's fantastic.

Punch The Monkey - Lupin The Third Remixes

Lupin the Third is a Japanese manga character that has appeared in films, tv programs and computer games. A friend of mine brought this back from Japan years ago and I've recently rediscovered it. The music manages to be super cool, odd and bosa nova all at the same time. It's is mostly written by Japanese Jazz guru Yuji Ohno and remixed by a variety of different people on this compilation. It's called Punch the Monkey because the author of the original manga's nom de plume is Monkey Punch. No monkeys were hurt in the making of this post (well not that many anyway).

Lee Perry - Kung Fu Meets The Dragon

This was originally released in 1975 but reissued in 1995 by Justice League records in Birmingham. It's made up of dub versions of other Lee Perry tracks with extra Kung Fu diaglogue, echos and Augustus Pablo noises. The cover is outstanding.

Pasărea Colibri - 10 ani vol.2

In 2007 I was trapped on a bus travelling into Transylvania. The bus driver played one tape over and over again and I learned to love the strange and interesting music that he tortured us with.

I ended up getting hold of a copy of an album which had a song called Vara La Tara on it because that was the catchiest tune. It turnsout the album is the second half of a concert that was recorded in The Children's Place in Bucharest in December 2002. The band were huge in Romania for 11 years but disbanded in 2003.

The name of the band Pasarea Colibri is a type of bird similar to a hummingbird.

Mechagodzilla

The music in the background of this track is completely the creation of Pojmasta who was at the forefront of classic mashup/glitch/bastard-pop which I was really into a few years ago. I stuck a load of samples in appropriate places from a few different Godzilla films.

This compilation of Vietnamese pop was found in a charity shop in Stockport. It's nice and mellow with lots of ballads.

Chris Geddes (Beans) from Belle and Sebastian posted this mix on the band's website sometime ago. It's now gone so I thought I'd resurrect it. It's top quality (apart from the Bon Jovi bit) and "Sound of Da Police" by KRS One is freakin brilliant. It's based on the set he did at the Summercase festival in Spain in 2007.

About a year ago I asked a Korean friend to make me a CD of some of the music he likes. He ended up giving me 2GB of music and it's taken me a while to digest it all. I've compiled a selection of songs from the ones he gave me.

The MC Sniper track is amazing and uses a really cool Rocky sample. The Magolpy song is a beautiful ballad and I found a video of it here. It's been interesting trying to work out who the artists were for each track since the data files I had were all in Korean and I don't speak a word.

Interestingly the SG of SG Wannabe stands for "Simon and Garfunkel" and the M.C. of M.C. the Max stands for "Moon Child" not "Master of Ceremonies" as you'd expect.
